Abstract

The term Bulgar emerged as a result of the encounters and mingling of the Huns, who migrated from Central Europe to the east, with another Turkish tribe, the Ogurs, in the Black Sea. The word Bulgar, which is a Turkish word, is derived from the verb bulgalama, which means to mix. In the sources, the name Bulgar is first mentioned in the sources in 482, with the Byzantine Emperor Zenon's request for help against the Ostrogoth King Theodoric. After the end of the Göktürk domination, Kubrat from the Onogur tribe managed to unite the Ogur tribes and establish a strong state under the name of Great Bulgaria.
